Is the Computer Killing Art?

Generations are not defined by events or inventions. They are defined by how people react to them. The GI Generation showed resilience in the face of the Great Depression and worldwide warfare. Baby Boomers reveled in the excess of reinvigorated economies. Generation X emerged from the Cold War Era with skepticism of cultural dominance.

The character of each generation is ingrained in their culture, culture that lies between the lines of history texts rich in dates and names, but poor in personality. But while culture is implied in historical documents, it shines through the art of the generation. Walker Evans’ Migrant Mother persevered through the Great Depression. Abstract Expressionists indulged in the pure process of painting. Cindy Sherman and her contemporaries rejected painting altogether using photography, video and installation to question gender and racial stereotypes.
